Albuñuelas – Río Saleres
A short walk that goes out along the GR-7 long-distance walking trail before returning on the other side of the Saleres river. Lovely views of the villages in the Lecrín valley, as well as to El Caballo in the Sierra Nevada. Continue reading
Boca de la Pesca
The twin-peaked Boca de la Pesca (“the fish’s mouth”) is a tiny mountain in comparison with those around it, but from the top there are commanding views of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada, Trevenque, the Dilar valley and the city of Granada down on the plain below. This walk is best in the late afternoon when the light is softer and you have more chance of some shade on the short but fairly steep climb. Continue reading
Cahorros
With its wild flowers, fruit trees heavy with apricots, almonds, cherries, apples and pomegranates, a cascading river and lavender, thyme and rosemary, the lush Monachil valley is a beautiful area for walking. Kids will love the hanging bridges and the dramatic gorge, and this walk is particularly recommended when the flowers are out in spring and when the leaves turn gold in autumn. Continue reading
Cañada Sereno
Great family walk with a lovely meadow where you can stop for a picnic half way round. Stone benches with fantastic views mean that there are plenty of places where you can stop for breather. Refill your water bottles at the source of the River Darro, one of the two rivers that run through Granada. Continue reading
Cerro de Maúllo
For most of the Spanish Civil War, the front between the Republicans and Nationalists ran close to Granada, and so the hills are dotted with the ruins of fortifications and trenches. This short walk takes you through pleasant wooded countryside to a relatively well-preserved Nationalist trench complex, from which there are also great views of the Sierra Nevada. Continue reading
Cruz de Víznar
The Cruz de Viznar (“Viznar Cross”) is planted on a small but prominent hill, just far enough away from the Sierra Nevada to give you amazing views of the whole mountain range. The climb up is steady rather than steep, and the effort it takes to get to the top is richly rewarded. Makes a lovely evening walk, when the soft light brings out the subtle colours of the surrounding mountains. Continue reading
Cueva del Agua
A straightforward and pleasant walk in the pine forests of the Sierra de Huétor, with some fantastic views of the whole of the Sierra Nevada, which are particularly spectacular with winter snow cover. This walk could be combined with the Cruz de Víznar walk to make a longer circuit. Continue reading
Hoya de la Mora – Veleta
On a clear day, the peak of Veleta offers 360° views of the surrounding mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the Mediterranean and even Africa. In summer and early autumn the ascent is remarkably straightforward for being such a high mountain, and the fresh mountain air at the summit is a welcome relief from the heat at lower altitudes. Continue reading
Llano de la Perdiz Loop
This walk explores the Llano de la Perdiz, an area of parkland above the Alhambra in Granada popular with locals for walking, cycling and Sunday picnics. You very soon leave the city behind, replacing it with views across to the Sierra Nevada to the south-east and the Sierra de Huétor to the north. The return part of the circuit offers views down into the Sacramonte valley and the Albaicín quarter of Granada.

Melegís – Reservoir
A very pleasant stroll through the orange groves of the Lecrín Valley, this circuit starts in the pretty, white village of Melegís, and also takes in the Béznar reservoir. Continue reading
